MVTA Connect Guide: On-Demand South Metro Transit

MVTA Connect is an on-demand, public ride-sharing service operated by the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA). It acts like a localized version of Uber or Lyft but at a fraction of the cost, designed to fill the gaps where traditional fixed-bus routes don't run.

The service officially launched on June 3, 2019, as a pilot program covering central Savage and western Burnsville. Because of its success, MVTA has continually expanded the service over the years to cover several South Metro suburbs, adding Scott County zones like Shakopee and Prior Lake.
⏰ Hours of Operation
The service operates 7 days a week during the following timeframe:
  • Monday through Sunday: 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
(Note: Rides must be requested and completed within this window. The ride-matching system relies on real-time driver availability, meaning wait times can fluctuate depending on vehicle demand and local traffic).
🗺️ Service Zones & Cross-Zone Navigation
MVTA Connect operates within three distinct, isolated geographical zones:
  1. The Main South Zone: Apple Valley, Burnsville, Rosemount, and Savage.
  2. The Eagan Zone: The municipal boundaries of Eagan.
  3. The Shakopee/Prior Lake Zone: Select portions of Shakopee and Prior Lake, linking riders directly to major hubs like the Marschall Road Transit Station and Mystic Lake Casino.
🔄 How to Navigate Between Zones
MVTA Connect vehicles cannot drive across zone boundaries (e.g., you cannot take a single Connect shuttle directly from Shakopee to Eagan). To travel between different zones, you must use traditional fixed-route buses as a bridge:
  1. Step 1: Hail an MVTA Connect ride from your door to a regional transit hub within your starting zone (such as the Burnsville, Apple Valley, Eagan, or Cedar Grove Transit Stations).
  2. Step 2: Board a standard regional fixed-route or express bus to cross over into the next zone's transit station.
  3. Step 3: Open your app inside the new zone to book a second MVTA Connect shuttle to take you to your final destination door.
🚪 Going from Door to Destination
MVTA Connect is a curb-to-curb service. Instead of walking to a scheduled bus stop, a professional driver in an MVTA Connect vehicle (often a small cutaway bus or an ADA-accessible van) picks you up directly from your starting address and drops you off exactly at your destination.
  • The Catch: Your entire trip must start and end within the same designated MVTA Connect service zone, or connect you directly to a major transit hub to cross zones as outlined above.
📱 How to Book a Ride
You can book a ride on-demand when you are ready to leave, or up to 3 hours in advance.
  1. Download the App: Search for the free RideMVTA App on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Register: Create a quick account using your phone number or email address.
  3. Plan the Trip: Tap "Plan your trip" or "Request a Ride" on the home screen.
  4. Enter Destinations: Set your exact pick-up address and your drop-off destination.
  5. Select Connect: Choose the travel option that features the Connect logo.
  6. Confirm: Select the number of riders, toggle on the wheelchair accessibility icon if needed, and tap "Request Ride Now". You can track your driver in real-time on the app map.
💵 How to Pay for Your Ride
A one-way trip on MVTA Connect costs a flat $3.00 per person. There are three ways to pay:
  • In the App: You can link a debit/credit card or Apple Pay to buy a digital "Connect One Way" ticket. You must slide to activate the ticket right before boarding and show it to the driver.
  • Go-To Card: Tap your regional Go-To Card on the plastic card reader next to the driver upon boarding. It will automatically deduct $3.00.
  • Cash: You can pay with physical cash in the fare box. Drivers cannot make change, so you must provide the exact $3.00 amount.
(Note: Veterans with a valid ID, Personal Care Attendants traveling with a client, and children ages 5 and under ride completely free).
🔄 How Transfers Work
Because MVTA Connect is meant to plug into the wider transit network, transferring is highly integrated but works as a one-way bridge to fixed routes:
  • From Connect ➔ Fixed Route Bus: When you ride MVTA Connect, you can request a same-day paper transfer ticket from your driver. If you paid with a Go-To Card, the transfer is embedded digitally. This transfer allows you to hop onto an intersecting MVTA fixed-route local or express bus that day without paying a second full fare.
  • From Fixed Route Bus ➔ Connect: MVTA Connect does not accept incoming transfers from fixed-route buses or other transit agencies (like Metro Transit). If you take a standard bus to a transit station and want to use MVTA Connect to get to your front door, you will need to pay a new $3.00 fare for the Connect leg of the trip.
